- a current proficiency in medical first aid certificate
- a competence in advance fire-fighting certificate (the basic fire-fighting certificate is a pre-requisite for this certificate)
- a proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats – (other than fast rescue boats) certificate (PISC)
- a current certificate of medical fitness.
Foreign-going certificates
Candidates for all foreign-going certificates must, before their certificate can be issued, hold the following:
- advanced fire-fighting
- proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats
- medical first aid (or, for masters and mates: medical care aboard ship)
- a current certificate of medical fitness.
The short-course certificates must all be less than five years old, either for joining a ship or for issue of a new certificate of competency. The certificate of medical fitness lasts for two years, and a current certificate must be held at all times while working on a ship.
