STCW-95 short course certificate

 
  The STCW95 short course certificate comprises:
  • fire prevention and fire-fighting (basic fire-fighting)
  • personal safety and social responsibilities
  • personal survival techniques
  • elementary first aid.
The certificate must be held by anyone seeking employment in the merchant navy or super yacht industry.


STCW95 Endorsement to a New Zealand Offshore Master
As well as the sea service requirements outlined in Rule 32.13, candidates wanting this endorsement must provide evidence of holding the following:
 
  • a current proficiency in medical first aid certificate
  • a competence in advance fire-fighting certificate (the basic fire-fighting certificate is a pre-requisite for this certificate)
  • a proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats – (other than fast rescue boats) certificate (PISC)
  • a current certificate of medical fitness.

Foreign-going certificates
Candidates for all foreign-going certificates must, before their certificate can be issued, hold the following:
  • advanced fire-fighting
  • proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats
  • medical first aid (or, for masters and mates: medical care aboard ship)
  • a current certificate of medical fitness.
The short-course certificates must all be less than five years old, either for joining a ship or for issue of a new certificate of competency. The certificate of medical fitness lasts for two years, and a current certificate must be held at all times while working on a ship.
