Recognition of a Non New Zealand Certificate of Competency
New Zealand receives many requests for recognition of foreign certificates of competency and whilst we can recognise many other administration’s licences with few problems the process of recognition is very time consuming. Presently we do not process recognitions unless you have a firm offer of employment in or on a NZ ship or are going to start your own marine business.
The process for recognising a non New Zealand certificate of competency is as follows. You have to: -
- Provide a certified copy of your certificate.
- Provide a certified copy of your passport with a NZ resident’s visa.
- Provide certified copies of any ancillary certificates. (First Aid, STCW ’95 certificates)
- Proof of the general requirements you had to meet before being examined for your present certificate. (Sea service etc.)
- Meet any medical requirements including eyesight that is required under the New Zealand legislation.
- Provide evidence that you are a ‘fit and proper person’ to hold a marine document. I.e.
- That you have no criminal convictions, past or pending.
- That you have no convictions for transport safety offences, past or pending.
- That you have no history of physical or mental problems.
- That you have no history of serious behavioural problems.

Please note that all documents must be in English or have an English translation from an approved translator attached.
You will have to complete an application form for a marine qualification, a fit and proper person and consent to disclose form and pay the statutory fee of NZ$300.00. We require all documentation to be provided as one package, individual documents will be returned.
You will be required to sit a safety oral exam to the standard of the requested recognition with an approved nautical examiner, (there is a fee payable to the nautical school/examiner for this service).
When all the above has been satisfactorily completed, you will be issued with a certificate recognising your foreign certificate to the New Zealand standard.
If your certificate is an STCW95 issue, your recognition will be endorsed that you have met the requirements.
Please note that any certificate of recognition issued by the Maritime New Zealand may not be recognised by other countries, unless you are serving on a New Zealand registered ship.
