Administration Fees

Examination fees and fees for certificates and licences - check that you are eligible first.

If you need to get a seagoing qualification to work commercially in the maritime industry, you must first apply to Maritime New Zealand to establish that you are eligible to be examined for the certificate. The Maritime NZ fee structures for issuing examination permits are set out in the table below. (These figures are subject to change and should only be used as an indication.)

It's important to note that these fees are not the total cost you will pay to get a certificate. For most certificates you must take a course with an approved training provider before being examined; schools charge for these courses. If a course is not necessary, you will still have to pay the examiners' fees. School fees will vary according to the course and the school itself - contact the school you'd like to study at for further information. Other costs may include fees for medical and/or eyesight examinations, and fees for short courses that may need to be taken in addition to the certificate courses.

Apply to Maritime New Zealand
It is important that you apply to Maritime NZ for an examination permit as early as possible - the rule says that an application must be made at least 21 days before the examination, or before the start of the course if a course is needed. Certain checks must be made on an application, which means it takes at least a week to issue an examination permit. If you do not supply all the information we need, this time can be considerably longer. If you do not have a permit you cannot be examined.
