Safety Equipment

All New Zealand ships operating commercially must be equipped with lifesaving (LSA) and fire fighting (FFA) appliances that meet the performance standards laid down in Maritime Rules 42A and 42B.

Manufacturers and retailers who wish to place their products on these lists of LSA and FFA equipment can contact Technical Adviser at the Maritime New Zealand for details of the process.

Owners should be aware that before purchasing LSA and FFA equipment they should contact their SSM surveyor because type and quantity of equipment differs for each ship.

Surveyors have the discretion to require additional LSA and FFA above the minimum specified in the Rules.

Maintenance and servicing requirements of LSA and FFA are laid down in Maritime Rules 42A and 42B.
