Safe Boating Courses

Under present legislation you do not need any "official" qualification to operate a pleasure boat (other than an Radio Operator Qualification if you own a marine radio such as a VHF). Also your boat does not have to have a survey or "warrant of fitness". However, the skipper is legally responsible for ensuring the boat and all people on board are safe, and for complying with all maritime rules. Ignorance of the rules is not accepted as an excuse.

Maritime New Zealand strongly recommends, however, that you get effective training and education about boating and boating safety.

A good source is Coastguard Boating Education which offers a wide range of theoretical and on-water practical courses nationwide, from beginner to advanced, to suit all types of boating. Call Coastguard Boating Education on freephone 0800 40 80 90 to find out about your nearest course provider.

Or visit their website: http://www.cbes.org.nz.

For other on-water sail training contact Yachting New Zealand, or your local kayaking, personal water craft, boating or fishing club as applicable.

For information about your local coastguard contact Coastguard New Zealand.
