Operators would ideally use SPAN to gauge their own safety performance,
and determine which aspect of their operation needs to be reviewed
so their SPAN number can be improved. Maritime NZ will also use
the benchmark (SPAN) to recognise operators which do have an acceptable
SPAN, and those which require assistance to improve their SPAN,
thereby improving the overall safety performance of the industry."
