Maritime Radio Licensing & Callsigns

Users of Maritime radio are required to be licensed and hold a call sign for their vessel (an exception to this is made in an emergency or distress situation).

The issuing of Radio call signs and information on the qualifications required can be found on the NZ Coastguard Federation Boating Education web site.

Further information in regard to licensing for vessels operation outside NZ coastal waters is available from the Ministry of Economic Development website.

Details are also contained in the Radio Handbook for Coastal Vessels.
