Waipapa Point Lighthouse Restoration

Introduction This fact sheet provides general information on the restoration of Waipapa Point lighthouse, near Invercargill.

Why the restoration? Aesthetically the appearance of the Waipapa tower is not up to the standard of other Maritime NZ lighthouses.  However, rather than carrying out temporary aesthetic repairs it is important to find a solution that addresses a number of underlying issues which if left may cause problems in the future.

What needs to be done?
Maritime NZ has been actively looking at a range of long term solutions to repair the lighthouse. The key factor in any long-term solution is to obtain a means of weather proofing the structure so it meets best building industry practice while preserving the historic character of the light.

The original design and historic classification mean that to date no guaranteed best practise solution has been found. Therefore Maritime NZ is planning to carry out a trial period of several coating / sealing options on a single side of the structure.  These will be applied during March-April 2007. This trial will address many of the design and age issues with the structure.

The lighthouse structure has been inspected by several engineers and it is in sound condition.

Recurrent vandalism is a major problem, with windows continually being broken and key structural and operational components being taken.  The tower does have a security system and fence to help protect it, but as part of the restoration project this is being reviewed with a view to finding a more effective long term solution.

What will happen during the trial period?
During the trial period three different coating systems will be applied to one side of the structure. A section of the balcony treads may also be removed to give full access to the cladding and structural detail.

The trial is intended to run for one year. At the end of the trial period the various coating systems will be evaluated with the view to starting full repair work in early 2008.

Maritime NZ’s role in lighthouse restoration
At Maritime NZ we carry out major lighthouse restoration work annually.  However, our primary role is providing functioning and reliable aids to navigation (lighthouses) for all vessels transiting New Zealand’s coastline.

Recent lighthouse restoration work includes East Cape, Mokohinau Island, Katiki Point in 2006 and Tiritiri Matangi, Kahurangi & the Waipapa trial in 2007.
